LESBIAN FERTILITY: WHERE TO START

In order to maximize success, we first will analyze the optimal treatment path for each patient. There are three primary methods for lesbians to build a family. The option you select depends on a variety of factors and questions, including:

  • Whose eggs will you be using?
  • Would you both like to be genetically related to the baby (via Reciprocal IVF/PAR)?
  • Who will physically carry the baby to term?
  • Will you use anonymous sperm from a sperm bank or known sperm from a relative or friend?

YOUR FERTILITY OPTIONS

Our Lesbian Fertility Program offers a comprehensive array of options for your specific situation – including:

PARTNER ASSISTED REPRODUCTION (PAR) / RECIPROCAL IVF

Partner Assisted Reproduction (PAR) or Reciprocal IVF, enables one partner to contribute her eggs for fertilization with donor sperm and the other partner to carry the pregnancy. This process allows both women to physically participate in the fertility process.

After a couple has chosen reciprocal IVF, they will begin a process that is almost identical to standard IVF. Both partners are given medication to stimulate fertility. The ovaries of the woman whose eggs will be used are stimulated with fertility drugs for approximately 8-10 days.

  • The partner who will carry the baby uses medications to thicken her uterine lining to ensure it will be ready to accept the embryo/embryos that will be transferred.
  • Our experts then retrieve the eggs in a minimally invasive procedure.
  • Our embryology lab then combines the donor sperm and the retrieved eggs to create embryos.
  • The embryos are then placed in the uterus of the partner who will carry the pregnancy.

lesbiancircleSELECTING A SPERM DONOR

A sperm donor can be selected through a sperm bank or a known donor (friend or relative). Our fertility center works with many reputable sperm banks who can assist in obtaining sperm samples. Once you have selected and purchased the donor sperm from a sperm bank, we will help arrange for shipment and storage of the specimen at our fertility center prior to treatment.

IVF WITH THE GENETIC SCREENING OF EMBRYOS

The genetic screening of embryos has become a popular option for lesbian family building.

Many couples opt for PGD or PGS techniques that determines whether the embryo is healthy enough to be carried to term. These important tests take place prior to the embryo being transferred back into the uterus.
