Tubal Reversal vs IVF

“Which should I choose – a tubal reversal or IVF?” It is one of the most frequently asked questions at our fertility center. And for us, it’s easy to answer.

Because our IVF Program success rates are equal to those after a tubal surgery and come with far less risk, inconvenience and cost to our patients – we strongly suggest in vitro fertilization (IVF).

babyglovesWHAT IS A TUBAL REVERSAL?

A tubal ligation is a surgery that provides women with a permanent form of birth control. It blocks the fallopian tubes and prevents the sperm and egg from fertilizing. In popular culture, it is referred to as getting your “tubes tied”.

A tubal reversal is a surgery that restores a woman’s fertility by reconnecting her fallopian tubes, thereby allowing the sperm and eggs to fertilize and pregnancy to occur.

WHY WE DO NOT RECOMMEND TUBAL REVERSALS

  • tubal reversals cost more than an IVF cycle at our center
  • tubal reversals require major surgery with a hospital stay
  • the ectopic pregnancy rate (pregnancies that fail & require emergency treatment) for tubals are 20% following surgery. IVF is 1%
  • the pregnancy rates for women who undergo reversal surgery is measured in YEARS and not months, as natural healing is needed
  • if the reversal surgery cannot correct the tubes, IVF will STILL be required

womancircleWHY IVF IS BETTER THAN A TUBAL REVERSAL

  • IVF at our center costs almost $2,000 less than a tubal reversal
  • IVF success rates are high and comparable to a tubal reversal
  • IVF is far less invasive than the major surgery required for a tubal reversal
  • IVF does not require a hospital stay or an extended recovery period
  • choosing IVF means future birth control is not needed

TUBAL REVERSAL OR IVF: COSTS

Not only is IVF just as successful, more convenient and safer than a tubal reversal, but it is also less expensive. A single IVF cycle at our fertility center costs much less than a tubal reversal surgery. Furthermore, if the damage to a patient’s fallopian tubes is substantial and her tubal reversal surgery is unsuccessful, the patient will incur additional costs with a subsequent IVF cycle.
